An outsider’s view of NCAA basketball madness at SDSU

After a long first day of orientation, the 2017 SMBA Class watched Aztecs Basketball take on the Fresno State Bulldogs at Viejas Arena. In a nail-biter, SDSU withstood a furious Bulldog comeback in the 2nd half, capped by an otherworldly buzzer beating three to tie it up the game at the end of regulation, 57-57.  The Aztecs went on to win in 67-73 in OT.

Having attended college in Mexico this was a completely new experience that will stay with me forever. From the size of the Viejas Arena, and the scope of the promotional and marketing activities to the incredible student section who stayed on their feet for the whole game (apparently, this happens everywhere across the country), it blew me away. After talking with some classmates, I learned that the electric atmosphere at Viejas that night is common in the US, and understood why everyone seems to take it for granted.  It is easy to get used to these events, and the incredible atmosphere that goes with them, and forget how amazing it is to be a part of something like it.

I urge every sport fan outside of the US to try and attend one of these games and root for the home team. It truly is a spectacular and unique experience.
