Nic Benson hails from Nairobi, Kenya and that might be one of his less interesting fun facts. A former player for Florida State and east coast based men’s clubs himself, Nic is a bonafide encyclopedia of rugby knowledge and is not afraid to share his passion and love of the game with the entire cohort. Boasting career experience in politics, international sports, the corporate world and other disciplines, Nic is truly a modern day renaissance man. As one of the elder statesmen in the class, he has never shied away from asking professors the tough questions or giving advice to his peers when needed. Mr. Benson has a bright future pursuing whatever path he chooses after graduation, but for USA rugby’s benefit we hope he stays in the sport!

What made you choose SDSU’s Sports MBA program? I love sports and I wanted to get an MBA, so I decided to go all in and try to combine the two. So far, no regrets!
What has been your most memorable experience so far in the SMBA program? Definitely, the study trip to the DR. Seeing the business ecosystem around Baseball in the Dominican Republic was eye opening. The DR is also a beautiful place and I am glad I got to experience it.
What do you hope to achieve while you’re a student in this program personally? I came to develop a new skillset, and immerse myself in the sports business. So far so good!
So far, what is your favorite class, and why? Statistics with Lackritz. It was a tough class and numbers have never been my strong suit, but I really enjoyed learning to analyze data in different ways and draw conclusions from it. Thanks Dr. L!
