Frequent visitors to the Sports MBA Blog will certainly be familiar with the Suits and Sneakers radio program, a weekly KCR Radio program featuring a rotating cast of current Sports MBA students. Longtime readers, however, will remember the Sports MBA Podcast, an initiative begun by Ryan Kaltenbach (SMBA ’12) that most recently flourished with the Class of 2014.
We’re rebooting the podcast this year, and the episodes will predominantly feature 1-on-1 interviews with alumni and executives in the sports industry. The first episode of the Sports MBA Podcast 3.0 is an interview with recent alumnus Mike Warkentin (SMBA ’13), the Venue Manager of Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Mike has been instrumental in leading the negotiations for the successful and amicable departure of long-term Rexall Place tenants, the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Oil Kings, as they finalize construction of their new facility in Edmonton. Additionally, Mike has taken on the management and oversight of the 20-show K-Days Fair Concert Series ($1.6 million budget) and the three-day Canadian Finals Rodeo Concert Series ($500k budget). He is a key figure in the planning for Northland’s future and will certainly be one of the people to help shape our industry for years to come. Since taking the reins as venue manager for Rexall Place at Northlands in Edmonton, Alberta, Mike has helped lead one of the most successful venues in the world. His current responsibilities include oversight for all sports and entertainment events worth nearly $37 million in annual gross revenue.
I hope you enjoy it!
