Intro to International Sports Marketing

Last week SMBA ’15 welcomed friend of the program Dan Ehman to the classroom to impart his knowledge of the sports marketing industry.  Dan first came into contact with SDSU when program director Scott Minto met him in Madrid while teaching a class at the Real Madrid Sports MBA program. Dan hails from Regina, Canada and has been working at GMR Marketing in Toronto for the past two years. His most recent position with the company is Account Manager, where he is in charge of coordinating marketing efforts for one of the company’s largest customers, RBC.

His talk revolved largely around the current climate for marketing agencies as well as an overview of the past education and the current work he does in relation to both sports and entertainment. Dan showed our class examples of his work, such as the video of GMR’s RBC Avion Card Activation from the Toronto Bluesfest event.  Dan also went over key marketing terms and the structure of most firms in the industry.  He left the students that afternoon with the challenge of answering a set of  questions to help determine their strengths and weaknesses and what in particular they really wanted out of the sports industry.

The next day we reconvened with Dan at a North Park restaurant where he gave each student individual time to go over the answers to their questions. Between sharing local San Diego craft beers and chatting with Dan about career paths, students were treated to an enjoyable afternoon and given substantial career advice and guidance.

Later that weekend Dan attended the San Diego State basketball game and was treated to a comeback victory over New Mexico that clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season title for the Aztecs.
