“Doing things the right way finds its way back”. That’s the vision both for life and for work that Marty Gorsich, Vice President of Partnerships and Business Affairs at the Century Club, communicated to the class when he visited last week.
Marty, who has over 15 years of experience in the Sports Industry in sponsorship, marketing and hospitality sales, talked to the SMBA cohort about his early days working his way up in the MLB for the San Diego Padres. He also discussed his experience in the NBA for the Portland Trail Blazers before tackling his current position in the Century Club, where his main objective is putting together the yearly Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Club. Since the class volunteered at this year’s Open, Gorsich tackled some of the class’s questions and comments about what transpired behind the scenes in Torrey Pines, and what may be happening in the near future.
Gorsich explained that their goal is to make Torrey Pines “an event, not just a golf tournament”, making it clear that tournaments cannot count on players to bring crowds on their own. He also emphasized that it is one of his goals to make Torrey interesting and fun enough by itself so that not only golf fans enjoy it, but also the other 75% of the public that do not attend golf tournaments regularly.
After Marty’s visit, the Farmers Insurance learning experience came full circle for the SMBA 16′ class. We want to thank both Marty Gorsich and the Century Club for having us and for giving us these valuable insights into the golf industry. Hopefully we’ll #SeeYouAtTorrey next year too.
Keep Calm and Torrey On!
