Mayweather vs. Berto Presser – Behind the Scenes

by Alex Lichtig (SMBA ’16)

In a rare day off from SDSU Sports MBA classes, I was fortunate enough to work with the operations crew behind the scenes at the Mayweather vs. Berta Press Conference.

The press conference was held in the JW Marriott within LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles.  The JW crew provided much of the infrastructure for the event, while various vendors were also called upon to create custom lighting, video, audio and décor. At the request of the client, the press conference used 8 foot tall shrubs and trees to create barriers and to distinguish the event from a regular press conference.

Production staff from Showtime and Mayweather Promotions PR personnel assisted in the press conference structure and production. Title sponsor Tecate was also onsite for activation including branded backdrops, blow-up Tecate bottles and even two Tecate models who stood onstage during the press conference. All the fighters were well versed to reiterate the date, venue and PPV –September 12, MGM Grand, and Showtime, respectively– during their speeches.

The press conference was a great behind the scenes look at all the coordination it takes to produce a quality event in a short timeframe. With only three days’ notice, the organizers were able to leverage their past vendor relationships to overdeliver for their client. It’s always a great reward to work on the production of an event and see it come to fruition, and I’ve continued to benefit from learning experience like this one outside of the Sports MBA classroom.
