Last weekend, a few of the SMBA students volunteered at the LPGA KIA Classic tournament in Carlsbad, Calif. The KIA Classic is in its fourth year at the luxurious Aviara Golf Club. The SMBA students were able to see LPGA players including, Ai Miyazoto, Ji-Yai Shin, Stacy Lewis, and even had the opportunity to meet with Michelle Wie. The event was a great networking experience with the LPGA organization and even some golf manufacturers such as Callaway and Titleist.
Similar to the volunteer experience at Torrey Pines, students were able to work on and off the greens through scorekeeping and administration assistance. Given the opportunity to work at the Farmer’s Insurance Open and the KIA Classic, it was truly an experience.
The KIA Classic provided the same glitz and glamour as the Farmer’s Insurance Open, but fell short in attendance compared to the men. The LPGA caters to a more intimate setting with the players and fans. Fans have firsthand interaction with the players before and after their individual rounds. After each of the players’ rounds, spectators had the opportunity to meet and obtain autographs from their favorite players. The popularity among their fans over the years has increased with the LPGA. If they continue to focus on the intimate relationships, they will be able to increase their attendance and provide unforgettable fan experiences.
