(L to R): Ian Cook II, Stephanie Patterson, Nathan Engel, Erika Lamiell-Singal (SMBA ’10), and Nathan Rees at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open
Four of the current Sports MBA students got the opportunity to volunteer at the 2015 Manhattan Beach Open this past weekend from August 13-16. This rich experience presented itself to us thanks to Erika Lamiell-Singal (SMBA ’10), a Sports MBA alumna and the current Director with IMG Action Sports. IMG helps brands reach the elusive youth market through high-impact action sports properties.
We had our hands full the entire time gaining experience within the field of event management, especially at a prestigious and storied site like Manhattan Beach. The site is known worldwide for its annual beach volleyball tournament and rewards its annual male and female victors with a plague on the Manhattan Beach Pier.
“The IMG staff was a close knit group that really accepted us and appreciated all the assistance we provided. Most impressively, the IMG staff were amazingly efficient and actively worked together to solve issues in a positive manner,” Ian Cook added.

This was a great opportunity for us to get a glimpse into sporting event management, considering the fact that we often had our hands full donning “multiple hats” throughout the day to ensure that the world-class tournament ran smoothly. The staff at IMG Action Sports was nothing short of outstanding in how they helped us quickly acclimate to the unique demands of the event and enabled us to contribute significantly toward the success of the four-day event.
