On Friday, January 23rd, the Sports MBA class of 2016 was paid a visit by current Alum Steve Gera (class of 2007). Steve came to our cohort with the intention of providing our class with insight on what it takes to be a leader in today’s sports industry. With such a challenging task ahead of us, as Graduate Students, we were all ears to hear Steve Gera’s journey across the sports world. From his days as a student in our SMBA program, working as an intern for the San Diego Chargers, to his current role as a Consultant and Lecturer for various organizations, Steve has an immense knowledge of leadership and our class benefitted from his motivating presentation. With readings such as “Message to Garcia” and “The Innovators DNA”, Steve set the tone for this upcoming school year and our cohort has been finding various ways to live by his leadership skillset. Having a “by any means necessary” attitude within this growing profession, Steve ensured us that our willingness and ambition to work with others and providing top tier skill would pay great dividends in the long run towards any career path. As a result of Steve’s visit, many of our current students have taken on projects outside of class in hopes to elevate their own leadership skill. I am looking to be a leader in the Sports Analytic Club that is in its infancy stages of being created by a few of the current SMBA students. It’s people like Steve that make others want to do more, in order to “elevate their game” to another level and standout as go-getters within the sports world we all revolve around. As a collective group, we would personally like to thank Steve Gera for giving us a push start towards our own journeys as SMBA Graduate Students, and we look forward to his next visit at San Diego State. Cheers Steve!
