Volunteering at Taste at the Cove

Xochitl Glaser (SMBA ’15) volunteered at the Taste at the Cove event, an annual charity event held by the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation at La Jolla Cove.

On Thursday September 4, San Diego sports icons and professionals descended upon the picturesque La Jolla Cove to celebrate San Diego State’s very own, Coach Steve Fisher, at the annual Taste at the Cove fundraiser, which I had the opportunity to volunteer at.

The 2014 version marked the 13th year of the signature of the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation. The foundation’s main purpose is to provide medical care for injured youth with limited financial means – helping thousands of San Diego student-athletes through its efforts.

Taste of the Cove is the siganture event of the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation.

Organized by San Diego event specialist The Kira Co., Taste at the Cove featured food from San Diego’s top-rated restaurants, a silent and live auction, and two local honorees.  As a volunteer for the evening, I assisted with the live auction to ensure that guests were engaged, informed and most of all, having fun.  Highlights of the live auction included competitive bidding wars on items such as dinner for 10 hosted by San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick, an autographed pair of Kawhi Leonard jerseys and tickets to the 2015 Masters in Augusta, Georgia.

The night concluded as surprise guest Jalen Rose presented the Community Legend award to Steve Fisher in front of thousands for his contribution to not only San Diego State University, but to the city of San Diego.

Having an interest in event management, I was able to gain hands-on experience at Taste at the Cove and observed the various logistics and presentation elements that went into making the fundraiser a success.
